1. How do I hang my tapestry?
There are two ways to hang tapestries:
a) Wooden Dowel: Smaller tapestries such as 26x36 wall hangings, can be hung by a lightweight wooden dowel. These smaller tapestries will have tabs or a rod pocket sewn into the back, where a dowel can slide through. Coat rack hooks screwed into the wall at each dowel end make for an inexpensive way to attractively hang your tapestry. Some of our tapestries have the dowel with a decorative finial included.
b) Decorative Rods: For larger, grande wall hangings, you will need a sturdier rod. These rods expand out to accommodate the width of the tapestry. Our dowels have decorative finials (ends) so you may choose from a variety of styles such as acorns, shepherd’s hook, pointed arrow, fleur-de-lis or crystal ball. Check the rod and finial page for a complete selection. Thread the rod through the hidden pocket in the back of the tapestry, and hang on wall with brackets that are included.
c) Finishing the Look: For more polish, hang a set of tieback tassels that coordinate with the colors in the tapestry on each of the rod. Or use your imagination and accentuate the them of the tapestry with any of the following materials: Natural-colored raffia, ivy garland, a long sheer drapery scaf or elegant satin draping to enhance the tapestry’s design. If you have a risqué French tapestry, consider hanging a pair of black elbow-length gloves at one end of the rod and a black lacy parasol at the other for a great conversation starter! A sunflower garland would make a sunny garden-themed tapestry come to life. A long, richly colored brocade fabric loosely draped at both ends of an Old World-style tapestry would look stunning! Get creative!
2. I have an old tapestry I purchased years ago that doesn’t have a pocket sewn in for hanging. How do I hang it?
If you have a vintage or antique tapestry that does not have a backing, you can still hang it with special clips that we sell (see our Hardware page). You can use this method to hang vintage material, tablecloths, scarves, small prayer rugs or even your Dogs Playing Poker velvet tapestry! All you need are a bag of clips and a rod to attach the clips to.
3. How do I take off a crease from my tapestry?
Due to folding and mailing, your tapestry may arrive with a few creases. To remove the creases:
1. Use a steam iron.
2. Lay the tapestry on an ironing board face down.
3. Place a soft cloth along the crease
4. Carefully and gently steam iron the crease out.
4. What if my tapestry has a flaw?
Unlike a framed print, your new tapestries may not be perfectly square. The beauty of the tapestry is that they are individually woven on a loom and like any material that has been created by a weaving process, may reflect some irregularities.
5. How do I clean my tapestry?
Because your tapestry is mounted on a wall, it will not receive the same wear and tear as other upholstered items (such as your couch or car seat) and should not get dirty. Unless you are using your tapestry as a rug, your tapestry should remain in the same clean condition as you received it. If your house is subjected to smoke, you may want to have your tapestry dry-cleaned if you see signs of yellowing or discoloration due to smoke.
6. The bottom of my tapestry wall hanging does not lay flat against the wall. How do I straighten it out?
A tiny opening where the tapestry front has been sewn to the backing, is on each wall hanging and you can obtain a small rod, the diameter of a chopstick and the width of the tapestry, to gently work through this tiny opening to act as a weight. Due to the nature of tapestry, it will bend or wave if subjected to high humidity but the heavier the bottom rod, the more pull it will provide to straighten the tapestry..
7. I want to hang my tapestry on my screened in porch. Will it fade?
Yes, as with any other type of textiles, frequent exposure to sunlight will fade the tapestry. If you hang in an outside area, keep out of any exposure of direct sunlight. If you are using the tapestry in place of a curtain or drape, you will need to face the tapestry to the interior of the room.
